Ah yes, the West Cork Railway. Could it ever return? I believe it could and put out a press release out on this last week. Then I finally found a report I had been looking for which put the likely cost at between €200m and €500m, so I put out a second release to counter the dismissal the proposal was receiving from mainstream parties.
Would you like to support this idea by putting a poster on the window of your car? We have a few mini-posters that you can put on your car window. You can download them here and print them on your inkjet.
Yikes! Its seven days away, there are 71,000 people in the constituency and I’ve only (!) shook hands with a few thousand of them. I can’t possibly get around the whole constituency. We don’t have a team of councillors and citizens who believe we got them their council house / pension / bus pass / planning permission and are willing to beat the streets on my behalf. So sorry blogs are so intermittent, I’m off!
I’d really like to see a copy of that report Quentin, how can I get my hands on it? I think your entirely right re-opening the rail lines would be an excellent investment for West Cork. Taking commuters out of cars and onto the train, likewise industry might be more attracted to the area if there was a rail link to Ringaskiddy. So with all those cars, lorries and buses off the roads they shouldn’t need upgrading. Thats just my opinion anyways maybe I’m a bit naive.
May 18th, 2007, at 2:19 pm #Your CommentQuentin I like many in West Cork are too long in the tooth to swallow this rubbish re: railway. Its a shame that you have gone down the road empty promises. A railway for west cork is equal to the Labour councillor R.I.P who gave us all a great laugh when he promised an Oil Refinery at Aughaville.

Still best of luck on 24th.

May 23rd, 2007, at 6:19 pm #This vision for developing the infrastructure and economy of West Cork by putting in a modern transport network is a great idea.Just when the level of building is slowing down it is very likely that this new development would “Keep the home fires burning”so to speak. The option of a railway would be a godsend for commuters: just ask the people of Youghal and Middleton. With the way modern lightweight trains are built the need for a heavyduty track should not be an obstacle to getting it done.
The value of a quick and affordable link between The City and us who choose to live “West of the Bandon” would add value, jobs and credibility to the West Cork Economy.
