Yes, I can see where you come from on this. But the reality is that in opposition we would have watched the same things happening. In relation to this issue at least, we have a complete revision of the building code introduced by John Gormeley which will ensure that houses in the future are much better built. Too little too late? Perhaps - but better than nothing.

Politics for some is a belief system that for example sees the Greens going in with FF as a U turn. I don't. I see politics as a means of running the country and pragmatism is needed to form coalitions. The Greens will get more done for their environmental agenda in the next five years than they could ever implement from the opposition benches, and right now, climate change is a major issue - far more important than much of the basic inter-party squabbling.

"In the background, I can hear the faint clinking of glasses at a certain tent in the Galway Races."

And a month later the Weasel Party (formerly the Greens) sold out on its principles, pissed on its voters' trust and went into power with the Builders Party.

I live in Rezone-Central (aka Fingal) and I'm pretty sure that you could have heard the laughter from my local FF cumainn down in Bantry when the news broke that Mrs. Gormless and Me Féiner Ryan had jumped into bed with the slime party.

Trevor S used to get three first preferences from my family - but henceforth he'll be getting 4 last preferences (our second child turns 18 next year so he too will have a vote when Trevor Turncoat comes shuffling around in 4 years time.)

Well done Quentin.

I think the Green move makes total sense. Better to be in a position to change things than grumbling from the outside.

Hopefully you all can make some practical economic changes soon to help people reduce their dependency on foreign fuels whether in the home or car.

Congratulations on the election! A 7% share on your first run is pretty impressive. Hopefully you will run in the local elections, or perhaps as the Munster candidate in the European elections in 2007.

Keep building up your profile between now and 2009, and success will come!

Your Comment
This vision for developing the infrastructure and economy of West Cork by putting in a modern transport network is a great idea.Just when the level of building is slowing down it is very likely that this new development would "Keep the home fires burning"so to speak. The option of a railway would be a godsend for commuters: just ask the people of Youghal and Middleton. With the way modern lightweight trains are built the need for a heavyduty track should not be an obstacle to getting it done.
The value of a quick and affordable link between The City and us who choose to live "West of the Bandon" would add value, jobs and credibility to the West Cork Economy.

Your CommentQuentin I like many in West Cork are too long in the tooth to swallow this rubbish re: railway. Its a shame that you have gone down the road empty promises. A railway for west cork is equal to the Labour councillor R.I.P who gave us all a great laugh when he promised an Oil Refinery at Aughaville.
Just stick to what is acheivable like making us all cycle to Cork & living in tree houses.
Still best of luck on 24th.

I'd really like to see a copy of that report Quentin, how can I get my hands on it? I think your entirely right re-opening the rail lines would be an excellent investment for West Cork. Taking commuters out of cars and onto the train, likewise industry might be more attracted to the area if there was a rail link to Ringaskiddy. So with all those cars, lorries and buses off the roads they shouldn't need upgrading. Thats just my opinion anyways maybe I'm a bit naive.
